YOGAROSA
SANTA EULARIA, IBIZA

BEST FOR: A TOTAL REBOOT AND REDISCOVERY OF YOUR INNER POTENTIAL
NOT FOR: ANYONE WHO DISLIKES DOGS, OR YOGA ATHLETES – THIS RETREAT IS AS MUCH ABOUT MEDITATION AND REBALANCING AS PRACTICING YOGA ASANAS

It’s 8.30 in the morning and while most visitors to the hedonistic island of Ibiza are just making their way home, after a hard night of partying. At YogaRosa Retreat, we are relaxing in the open air sala surrounded by fragrant rosemary, lavender and rose bushes. As we enjoy soothing herbal teas, in preparation for 90 minutes of therapeutic yoga, the only sound we hear is the wind rustling through the pine trees, birdsong and farmyard noises from the pet teapot pig Lola and the ducks and chickens – all combining in a cacophony of nature’s own music.

Yogi Rosa Klein embodies the power of daily yoga practice: a beautiful woman inside and out, serene and full of light. She turned to yoga after a catastrophic car accident 12 years ago, which left her bedridden for a year. Yoga transformed her life, which then inspired her to train as a yoga teacher, and now she sees it as her life’s calling to help others.

The therapeutic yoga session begins with Sun Salutations and continues with asanas which flow seamlessly from one to the other. Rosa believes that regular repetition of a specific set of movements helps people recover their equilibrium and relieve them from stress and depression. Therapeutic yoga suits novices as well as the advanced students. Though for the more advanced she recommends that they practice it with their eyes close, which can act as a meditation.

Our morning yoga is followed by a lavish brunch served on a huge reclaimed wood refractory table poolside. A gorgeous sight for rumbling tummies – the tables is literally groaning, with fresh local produce, starting with the best porridge in the universe full of healing spices and goji berries, yogurt, seeded vegan bread, seasonal fruit, smoothies, vegetables and freshly laid eggs any which way created by the handsome Austrian chef Philipp Gandler.

The rest of the day is spent relaxing, around the two pools, or having a choice of massages. My Swedish therapeutic massage, which I enjoyed under the olive tree and no blushes were spared. There are inviting hammocks to doze in, driftwood sofas to dream away the day and salas to relax in. If you feel so inclined, you can build a pyramid with rocks lying around the garden. I also made sure to bribe Lola the pig with medjool dates to get a daily bristly cuddle.

Evening meditation begins before sunset. We start with Pranayama and continue in Shivasana (dead man’s pose) with Kriya yoga meditation, where, we mapped our body, giving a blessing to each part. This ancient practice is meant to rapidly accelerate one’s spiritual progress.

A dramatic skyline of orange and red hues provides you with the perfect backdrop for your sumptuous evening meal. Chef Philipp performs his magic again with a three-course vegan or vegetarian meal, set upon a very stylishly laid dinner table.   We feasted upon a menu like: celery soup, falafel, aubergine crème, lemon mashed potato with truffle, cauliflower and red onion salad with a dessert of spelt Genoise sponge with homemade apricot jam and sliced mango. There’s a generosity of spirit that encompasses each meal. Apart from accommodating every whim or dietary request, each evening, after your artistically arranged main course arrives, family style bowls of extra food are added, for second or third helpings. This is the time when the group mix and mingle, chat and compare experiences of the day. I was with a small group of single profession women, all of whom were looking for love online. So much hilarity was had as they checked their texts. The future plan includes a new enclosed sala and a small restaurant with six tables serving vegan or vegetarian meals with fish and organic wine.

The accommodation is built around one of the two pools. Rustic luxury at its best with no expense spared. Two buildings, with a series of rooms, beautifully plastered over roughly hewn dry stone walls. Each has timber rafters and red floor tiles with a separate sitting area, fully fitted kitchen and en suite bathrooms. Everything has been chosen with comfort in mind; from the fluffy robes and slippers to the cosy stone-washed linen sheets, and soft hemp rugs. As there are only two meals a day, Rosa provides plenty of healthy snacks of fresh fruit, plus seeds, nuts, berries and dried fruit in kilner jars for grazing in the rooms.

After a week at the Retreat, Rosa’s magic worked. We all felt empowered, energised, balanced and felt loved and confident to continue our daily practice at home. And everyone had signed off from online dating.
